How to resolve an 8009 error while trying to synchronize data (Windows)
An “8009” error on the PC during a HotSync® operation may indicate a problem with one or more entries in the Windows registry. The error message reads, "an application has failed to respond to a HotSync notification –(8009)". The cause for this error may be related to Palm synchronization conduits or 3rd party software installed on the computer.
There are three likely causes of this issue:
1. Specific Documents to Go® software (notifiers) installed in an incorrect location on the desktop computer.
2. A non-Microsoft MAPI.DLL file is installed on the desktop computer. This DLL may be installed by non-Microsoft specific email clients. Users of Outlook or Outlook Express are less likely to experience this issue.
3. A 3rd party synchronization conduit may be causing the 8009 error.
Palm has released software, called HotSync Utility (file: HotSyncCheck.exe), to address some of these errors during synchronization. Running the HotSync Utility application as instructed below will resolve most instances of 8009 errors.
Instructions for using HotSync Utility:
1. Download the HotSyncCheck.exe file located at: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/hotsynccheck.html
2. Follow the directions on the download page to uncompress the file
3. Launch the HotSync Utility program and click Next (see images below)
4. If problems are found, the following screen will be displayed.
5. You should not remove unchecked items. If the HotSync Utility identifies ocpNotifier.dll for removal you can choose to remove it or follow the process in step 5a below.
Microsoft’s FixMapi.exe tool will update your MAPI.DLL. See Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 228457 for information on use of this tool. Outlook 97/98 users should read Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 193681 prior to using this tool.
6. If no problems are found the following screen will be displayed.
7. Once the HotSync Utility has completed its scan, proceed to perform a HotSync operation. If the HotSync operation completes successfully, you are done. Otherwise, continue and perform the following procedure to check for 3rd party conduits that may be causing the 8009 error.
To check for 3rd party conduits:
1. Uninstall any 3rd party software (non-Palm) that uses the HotSync process to transfer information to your handheld.
a. Go to the Windows Start menu and select Settings: Control panel
b. Launch the Add/Remove Programs control panel and follow directions for uninstalling software
2. Perform a HotSync operation after each instance of 3rd party software is uninstalled.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until your HotSync operation is successful.
When the HotSync operation completes successfully, check with the developer of the software application removed just prior to the successful HotSync process for an updated version or support identifying the problem. Other 3rd party software should be reinstalled from the original disk(s) or file(s).
If the above procedures still have not resolved your 8009 errors, you will need to rebuild your Windows Registry entries for HotSync Manager. Continue with the procedure below.
Warning: This article includes instructions for modifying the Windows registry. Before you so this, make sure to back up the registry, and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986 for more information.
HotSync Manager registry settings:
To rebuild the HotSync Manager registry settings, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the Palm™ Desktop software. To completely remove Palm software from your computer, including the Palm Desktop and HotSync® Manager from your computer, perform a normal uninstall of the software and then remove the Palm software entries in the Windows Registry.
To uninstall the Palm Desktop software, do the following:
1. Close all open windows and applications.
2. Click Start in the bottom left corner of your screen.
3. Select Settings, then Control Panel.
4. Double click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
5. Scroll down and select Palm Desktop or Pilot Desktop.
6. Click the Add/Remove button and Palm Desktop should uninstall.
To remove Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager registry entries, follow the instructions below. Warning - the following steps need to be followed exactly or unexpected results may occur with your computer.
1. Shut down any open windows or applications
2. Click on the Start menu, then select Run
3. Type in regedit and click OK.
4. Click on the word Registry and select Export Registry File
5. Set the directory where you are saving the registry file to your Desktop.
6. Type in any name for the file, and make sure All is selected.
7. Click SAVE, and verify that it has created a backup file on your desktop.
8. Press the plus sign next to the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER”.
9. Press the plus sign next to “Software”.
10. If you see a folder called “U.S. Robotics” click the plus sign next to it.
11. Right click the “Pilot Desktop” folder and select Delete.
12. Close the Registry Editor window.
Remember to restart your computer to ensure that the changes take effect.
When your computer has restarted, install Palm Desktop software from the original CD by following the procedure below.
1. Exit any open programs, including those that run automatically at startup (such as Microsoft Office) and virus-scanning software.
2. Insert the Palm Desktop CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Note: If installation does not begin, click the Windows Start button, choose Run, then enter d:\autorun.exe, and click OK. If necessary, replace D: with the appropriate CD-ROM drive letter assigned.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. During the installation, you may be asked to connect your handheld to the HotSync cradle.
4. Perform a HotSync operation.
IMPORTANT: Previously it was recommended to restore the registry settings by running HotSync Manager with the "-r" command ("HotSync.exe -r"). This is no longer recommended because it will restore an out-of-date set of registry entries. Instead, re-install Palm Desktop from the original CD."
