Wang seems to get better even in that heat?)
I tell you, he may have gotten a little tired at the end. But, I mean, you are so tempted to leave him out there. He wanted to stay out there. But, he is remarkable! He really is.
I go back to the game he lost, the tough game he lost in Washington. It was like 100 degrees that day, and he just went out there, like it was 75.
Yeah, He just ... I don't know, There are some pitches that he got ahead of some hitters, I don't think he was wild. I think he wasjust making ptiches, and the ball was moving all over the place.
But again, he has no panic in him. And he recovered very well. And ... I don't know. Whatever Gator said to him, it worked, through the rest of the game.
Joe, you said the pitch count was high, That's why you decided not to ...)
Joe,
Well, it wasn't high. But it could have gotten high. I send him out there for the 9th inning, I could envision it going to 112, 115, And I don't need for him to do that.
Last time he threw 104, I think. And he certainly could have done it, and it would have been no big deal. But not getting an extra day next time, I just thought it was ... probably the smartest thing to do at this point.)
Do you still find yourself trying to remind yourself that Wang is only in his second year, or are you beyond that now?)
I guess I have to be beyond that. because ... when I send him out there, you don't even consider ... you know, the only thing you keep an eye on is the pitch count.
And if the pitch count is there, even if he is not firing on all burners, even if he is not pitching like he did tonight, shutout baseball, he throws strikes. And he is still your best option to get a ground ball.
So there is a lot to him, more than the fact that he will throw shutout innings. But the fact that he can get ground balls, he throws a lot of strikes, even in games he may not be, as I said, as good as he has been the last couple of times out, he is still going to keep you in the game. And you are still going to trust him with it.)
