Korean Air Restricts Apple, Dell Notebooks Onboard?
Korean Air is restricting passengers from carrying Dell and Apple laptop computers onboard after concerns that their batteries blow up, it was learned on Monday. The airline has posted public notices at Gimpo and Incheon International Airport outlining the new restrictions.
“The risk of explosion from Apple and Dell laptops equipped with Sony batteries has recently been brought up," an official at Korean Air said Monday. "We have therefore decided to restrict these products from being carried onboard.” The staffer emphasized that the notebooks are not altogether banned from transport: “If the batteries are checked in, they can be picked up at the destination,” he added. The airline adopted the restrictions on Aug. 30.
They ban all Dell models and the Apple iBook and Powerbook. Korean Air says it will continue to enforce the ban until there is proof that the batteries do not pose a threat. Asiana and others are pondering a similar ban.
Apple and Dell expressed regret. "The batteries are originally from Sony," an Apple Computer Korea staffer said. "Making it seem like there is some problem with Apple and Dell computers is not appropriate.” A staffer with Dell Korea says, "If passengers just check the batteries in their luggage it is still possible to use their computers once they arrive overseas |
