It's better to read the fine prints very carefully. Even with 1% is very fair, using credit card is still better because the rate for currency exchange is better than that of exchanging money in bank.

Debit card is also convenient to use in US. However, banks in Taiwan charge fee for withdrawing money internationally using your ATM card, in addition to the ATM. It is  x%+a minimum charge, something like that. Otherwise, ATM card is convenient. (For this part, I feel that the banks in US are better; my ATM card doesn't charge such an extra fee.)
